Main Activities

The in the 7th Framework Programme funded CETRRA project was dedicated to contribute to the European Research Area in surface transport – to strengthen the competitiveness of the European surface transport sector. This have been achieved by providing excellent research capabilities from the EU and Asia to European Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SME) by EURNEX competence. Furthermore the cooperation with research Excellencies from non-EU countries has been stimulate research of mutual interest and strengthened the European as well as non-European research Excellencies. Main benefits for the integration of non-EU researchers in CETRRA and therefore in EURNEX are

- The scientific exchange on an international level,
- The training of junior scientists and researchers using the EURNEX assets,
- The identification of research areas that are of mutual interest and
- The solving of problems in the international railway sector with European know how.

Main benefits for SME contributing to the CETRRA project and therefore as associated partners in EURNEX are

- An overview of the state of the art of the surface transport sector as a whole as well as specific topics,
- An insight in current research trends,
- An evaluation of their individual know how (respecting sensitive information), and
- An access to excellent research capabilities and test facilities.

Main achievements and added value for the research community

The essential achievement of CETRRA is matching of the special abilities, capabilities and competencies of the various partners of this project. CETRRA outcome is a data overview on current research projects of the international researchers, their experience in sharing knowledge and their background information in order to create personal contact between researchers and science and industry. CETRRA participants are from countries all over Europe and Asia which gives the possibility to build bridges between the railroad networks of Eurasia.

At the same time CETRRA partners could fostering of the international co operations and an acquisition of new contacts among the participants, the involvement in future research projects and to find partnerships in R&D, for potential business ventures and the developing of new products. In line with partner requirements the results of a questionnaire were used to create a “short list of cooperation” with EURNEX Scientific Poles of Excellence.

EURNEX, the European rail research network of excellence, a leading partner in CETRRA has been set up in a new quality by end 2007. It has been successfully turned from a 4 year EC project in the 6th Framework Programme into a self standing sustainable legal entity. Driven by operators and industries and supported by the European Commission, European rail research specialists have integrated their expertise into multidisciplinary, customer oriented scientific poles of excellence.

EURNEX Association has been established by more than 42 institutional members and is acting as an entity, encompassing some 600 excellent researchers in the EU-27.

The ten scientific poles providing local based services in the EU member states representing and sharing the summarised knowledge of the European rail research community for overcoming the so far fragmented research landscape.

CETRRA project is a living instrument to make better use if limited resources with added value to the customers as well as to the members for the money spend.
